wahine (wä-hē-nē) noun: a female surfer. also see, a Polynesian goddess, a beautiful Hawaiian woman.
soup: the white foam after the wave has broken.
Welcome to Wahine Soup! A blog for all the wild water women who are embarking on ocean adventures! Although the main focus of this forum is surfing (specifically girl surfers who are relatively new to the sport), all fantastic females are welcome!
Surfing is a sport that's traditionally dominated by men, but there are some daring wahines out there who are bringing the fun of riding waves (and the ridiculous antics that come with learning a really tough sport) to their local beaches and more importantly, to their friends. Surfing is the most difficult sport I've ever attempted, and 10 years of snowboarding has done absolutely nothing to prepare me. In fact, snowboarding has ingrained in me a long list of bad habits that do not transfer to surfing whatsoever, and actually make life more difficult in the water. Needless to say, when a girl needs help, she enlists her girlfriends!
So, here we are, a tribe of wahines out in the waves learning how to break into a boys club. But more significantly, we're all rekindling a unique love for the ocean in our own ways, and sealing friendships with wipeouts, laughter, and foam.
