Driving down Field Street into Tecolote Canyon took a disgusting turn yesterday. I travel that route on a regular basis and have watched the transformation of our City’s initiated upgrade of the west half of the canyon drive from a prolonged cracked, eroded condition into a “good as new” road with a fresh slurry coat and paint striping. Heading down the hill became a pleasurable experience until yesterday. Apparently, a twisted form of defacing/graffiti presented itself on the road. In several spots along the formerly beautiful road, paint cans of various colors and amounts had been sporadically and intentionally flung from a vehicle producing ugly splats of paint, ruining the aesthetics of the roadway.
What compels an individual to do such a thing? What psychological thrill does one achieve by this type of behavior? Has anyone else observed this type of vandalism?
What it does attain is a cringing on my part on every trip down into our precious canyon. My blood pressure shot up when the defacement blasted me in the face. In addition, the City of San Diego will be forced to assign another crew to do some corrective action in order to do their best in blacking out the damage and restriping, resulting in more needless expense we can’t afford.
I wish this reprehensible conduct could have been witnessed, reported and punished.
