GONZO: Art Inspired by Hunter S. Thompson

SAN DIEGO, CA, November, 2012 - Drugs enhance creativity. At least that is what Hunter S. Thompson would say. Although many disapprove of Thompson writings due to his drug-filled lifestyle and unorthodox take on people and infrastructure, his influence persists through time. Chaotic, sinful, aggressive, and unsettlingly honest could describe the work of the revolutionary writer. Local artists will attempt to channel the writer’s chaotic, sinful, and unsettling honest style through their pieces inspired by Thompson in the upcoming art exhibition titled “Gonzo: Art Inspired by Hunter S.Thompson” on display November 20 at BASIC.

Mr. Dvice’s work is littered with undertones of chaos, aggression, and absurdity. In his own words, The artist’s work is “soaked with insomnia, cartoons, wine and weed, a distorted view of the world around him with a psychedelic twist.” The subject matter and color of his work envelopes the viewer in a faux drug-induced state, which is not easily shaken. Mr. Dvice’s figures are most accurately described as “goons.”

Another artist who also shares Thompson’s taste for the odd is local artist Kristel Boe. The artist experiments with various art mediums and methods to create her beautifully colorful artwork. Her subject matter can be most often described as quirky, while also questioning accepted social norms.

Larry Caveny, an esteemed artist showing in the upcoming exhibition, also mirrors Thompson’s style because his work demonstrates mental turmoil in an aggressive manner. Caveny combines sculpture and painting in his unique way in order to create seemingly “dirty” artwork. Caveny focuses his work around the human condition and its frailty. Much of Caveny’s painting conveys a sense of disorder and information overload.

Other artists included in the show are Espana Garcia, Ina .T., Janelle Carter, Geoffrey Redd, Cody Huff, Arslane Merabet, Joel Elizalde, Rich Walker, and Alli Bautista. In addition there will be DJs and live painting by True Delorenzo, David Goff, Sharif I. Carter, and Annamarie Flores. Jewelry and fashion from Ginger Lou Handbags, Friendly Feather Shop, and Brehm T-shirt Co. will be on hand.

The show will at BASIC will run from 7 pm to 12 am on November 20. The event is free to attend and open to the public. However, you must be at least 21-years-old to attend. BASIC is located at 410 Tenth Avenue in downtown.
