Saw an anti-Meg Whitman for California governor sign while driving home today. It was a large white, generic sign with a couple of attack points hanging on a fence that surrounds a vacant lot on Mission Village and Melbourne Avenue where a gas station once stood.
The gas station was still open when we moved here 11 years ago. There used to be three around Mission Village. They've all closed. The one near my house is collecting moss and now of course political signs.
The sign might as well have been an anti-Jerry Brown ad but it got me thinking about the politics in my neighborhood. Democrat? Republican? Can't tell from one sign but I know Donna Frye, a Democrat, represents my area.
I first heard her name in the early 2000s when she was running for council. My neighbor Gary Rotto was a candidate for the District 6 council and had a lot of signs posted around our block. There was only one Frye sign on my street and that's how I got to know the name. I interviewed her over the years. A few ex-UT writers were on her staff also. She's leaving office and there is competition to succeed her. Howard Wayne, a Democat, and Lori Zapf, a Republican, are the frontrunners.
Best of luck to whoever wins and we're looking forward to getting to know you. Maybe you can do something about all the vacant lots in Serra Mesa. We can do better than having them be just a place to hang political signs.
