San Diego - Fun Friday Memories

I grew up in a suburb of Boston, Wakefield, Massachusetts. Wakefield was a very nice community, with a wonderful Fourth Of July celebration, 2 lakes, a town common with a band stand. Really - a place not unlike all the little towns romanticised in those wonderful musicals of the 1950's. I had an older brother and two older sisters. My brother became a pro baseball player and left Wakefield to pursue his dreams in 1961, when I was 5. My older sister left Wakefield on an amazing adventure and moved to Hollywood in 1964. After less than a year, she moved to San Diego, and fell in love with this city.

My sister would write and call and send pictures and calendars all about San Diego. It was clean, beautiful, safe, and the people were just so nice! Finally, in 1967, My folks and I made our first trip to California, and San Diego. My sister was married by then, and she and her husband made certain to show our parents a good time. They went to Mickey Finn's, and some of the resorts on Hotel Circle. They even went to The Body Shop, just so they could say they had been there. For me, just a few months shy of 12 years old, the big excitement was taking the Harbor Cruise, visiting the Zoo, Sea World, The Wild Animal Park (Brand new at that time) and the most wonderful place I had ever seen - Disneyland.

We stayed on the outskirts of La Mesa on Rolando Knolls Drive. Dad and I would get up early each morning and walk down to the miniature golf course and go to Cinderella Pies for something yummy while Mom and my sister would visit. One day we all took the bus down town, and that's when i learnedthe real magic of this place. A couple was sitting behind me on the bus, and we began to chat. I asked how long they hd been here, because it seemed that everyone was from somewhere else. They were from somewhere in the midwest, but what they told me always stayed with me - They were married in the late 1940's and came to San Diego on their honeymoon. Afetr a week here, they called their family and had them sell everything and send them the money - they were staying in San Diego.

That vacation, and many trips back, simply made me love San Diego. This City has everything I could ever want, and is the best place on earth to live. That's my take, and that's why I started this blog.
