Belly laugh

What’s more embarrassing than to laugh so hard you cry and your mascara runs down your face? Damn, I should have worn waterproof tonight. Even more embarrassing is when beer sprays out of your mouth during that unexpected laugh just after you take a drink. Both happened to me at the American Comedy Co. Fortunately the lights were dim, so I don’t think anyone noticed, and I’ll bet they were too busy laughing out loud themselves.

With a demanding career, two kids, and a puppy, I don’t get out on the town much. Yet, to celebrate my girlfriend’s birthday, I wanted to do something special, so I secured tickets to see Christian Finnegan at the American Comedy Club located right in the heart of San Diego Gaslamp on 6th Avenue between E and F streets. Ticket prices range from about $15 to $22 depending on the comedian, with a two-drink minimum. Drink prices range from $6 for a beer to $10 for a cocktail.

We arrived at 10:15pm for a 10:30 show, to a guy at the door who asked for my name, then checked his hand held device – phone or ipad I’m not sure which -- to confirm our tickets and grant us access. He announced downstairs that a party of two was headed their way. No line at the door, we were seated right away, in the center of the small venue seating about 200. Nice start! The room projects a warm and patriotic ambiance, with red, white, and blue tones all throughout. A waitress showed up to take our drink order within a few minutes. The flip menu on the table listed a variety of beer and wine choices, and also burgers and other “pub” food affordable

Although the club hasn’t been open long, they have managed to book a top-notch line up of talent including Tom Arnold, Drew Carey, and Dov Davidoff. No doubt we were lucky to have found the place early on as it will sure to have a sold out crowd every night once the word gets out.
