Media Arts Center's Carnival Fundraiser Thursday

Yearly scholarship fundraiser promises a carnival-themed frenzy of food, drinks and fun.

"Every year we have some kind of fundraiser or online campaign to raise money for need-based scholarships so youth can attend our media arts programs," says Media Arts Center San Diego's Education & Outreach Coordinator, Julia Richardson, via email.

"We are trying to raise $7,000 so we can provide 30 need-based scholarships to San Diego youth. The scholarships are good for one week of the Youth Media & Tech Camp for 1st-8th graders or one session of the Teen Producers Project for high schoolers."

This year they decided on something different for their fundraiser - a carnival-themed extravaganza - which they are not taking lightly.

Thursday, June 13 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. the entire grounds of the Media Arts Center (2921 El Cajon Boulevard), both inside and out, will be transformed into a carnival wonderland.

Your admission price - $20 in advance, $25 at the door (those ages 16 and under are free) - will get you hosted carnival-themed grub, non-alcoholic drinks, entertainment and a ticket to spend on the boozey drink of your choice.

The free food consists of veggie corn dogs and chili dogs served by True Kitchen Creatives, cookies & candy donated by Trader Joe's, nachos, cotton candy, and make-your-own caramel apples.

That drink ticket can be used for a beer from Stone Brewing or Nincasi Brewery, a margarita, or a glass of red or white wine; after that, there is a $3 suggested donation.

Banjo-playing stilt-walker Johnny High-Hat and magician Nathan Gibson, who was featured on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, will be roaming the makeshift carnival grounds.

Two comics from the La Jolla Comedy Store, Mike Vinn and Aaron Hughes, are slated to perform starting around 6:45 p.m.

Carnival-related short films will also be screening for free in their 49-seat cinema.

Carnival games, like ring toss and dart-throwing, will be one ticket to play - with $5 buying 5 tickets, $10 for 12 tickets, and all the money benefiting the scholarship program.

The Media Arts Center was also able to wrangle up a whole mess of donations for a silent auction including, but not limited to:

Movie Gift Basket from Digital Arts Movement

Gifts from Bike San Diego

Cruise on the Hornblower

Gifts from The Homebrewer

Nikon Coolpix Cameras from George's Camera
