It's Just Surfing: art and photography in Barrio Logan

Tonight see handcrafted surfboards, a vintage surfboard retrospective, music and surf photography

“No matter how you spend your time in the water, you don't have to be categorized as anything,” says local surfer Kevin Ferris via email.

“We’re all enjoying the same stoke and when it comes down to it... it's just surfing.”

Ferris took the "it's just surfing" philosophy and ran with it - translating the idea into a surf craft and photo collective show of the same name put on by The Birds and The Beards, Ferris’ clothing company and blog of “all things rad”.

On display will be handplanes and surfboards handmade by local San Diego surfboard shapers plus local photography of “surfing from all different angles”, including shots of what goes on inside the work spaces of board shapers.

Also on display will be a collection of vintage boards, mostly from the 50’s and 60’s, but comprehensive enough to give those attending, as Ferris explains, "a walk through history with the progression of the sport, from early Bob Simmons to the legendary San Diegan Skip Frye,” and “how the boards have changed over the years.”

The local artists whose handcrafted surfboards will be on display are:

Old Harbor Surfboards

Citrus Shapes

Salty Shapes Handplanes

Kevin Ferris (the man, himself)

Keeping in tune with Ferris’ notion of “all things rad” he also booked a performance by The Lumps who are slated to take the stage at 8:30 p.m.

The female-fronted trio describe their sound as “party punk to rawk your face”; judge for yourself with their official Homework From Hell video:

Free and all-ages, It's Just Surfing is happening tonight, January 18 starting at 6 p.m. at The Spot Barrio Logan (1835 Main St.)

With local surf-centric sponsors like Brixton, Insight and Surf Hut you're sure to be in good company.
