Tomorrow, Thursday, January 3, Art in the Park celebrates their first monthly installment of 2013 at Bluefoot Bar & Lounge (3404 30th Street – North Park) with the return of founder Bency.
Every first Thursday of the month, Bluefoot's back room transforms into a dance party complete with live art, DJs, and live-beat musicians.
Local and transborder artists scrawl on cuts of cardboard, etch wood pieces, fasten leather, and paint graffiti-esque portraits while attendees chat with the artists, nosh on soul food, and groove to music by DJs such as Mystery Cave, ill spectre, Abjo, Ele, and Sufficient Sounds. This month’s installment features art by:

Art in the Park curator Andre Power also curates Trill at El Dorado.
“I’m really excited about the San Diego beat scene right now...happy to be a part of it,” writes Trill promoter Andre Power via email, “but my goal is to give people more than just a night of head-nodding.”
Coined after hip-hop slang fusing “true” and “real” and denoting respect, Trill debuted in June and showcases the future sounds of electronic music and live beats every first Wednesday to a backdrop of live art and craft cocktails at downtown lounge El Dorado.
“I’ve recently connected with local DJ Sasha Marie after hearing a mix she put out online,” says Power, “which made me feel really good about the direction San Diego DJs are moving in. The sound within the mix she released was futuristic, fun, funky, upbeat but still had an urban ‘crunk,’ ‘trill’ sound, which is the same music I enjoy spinning.”
Power says the focus of most of his events is education and providing people with a unique audio/visual experience, not unlike his monthly Art in the Park night held every first Thursday at Bluefoot Bar and Lounge in North Park.
“My goal with Trill is just that, a new audio experience for downtown San Diego, with international genres, such as ‘future bass,’ ‘trap,’ ‘juke/footwork,’ and ‘future funk.’ All of these sounds and more can easily be found with a bit of digital diggin’, but a good place to start would be [Power’s label] soulection.com.”
