The 10th Annual Law Enforcement vs. Kiwanis Challenge Guacamole Bowl fundraiser hits Balboa Park Saturday, February 23.
Dubbed a “good old fashioned guacamole cook-off”, the Balboa Park Club (2150 Pan American Road West) is the place to be from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. “if you like good guacamole, and lots of it,” states event founder and Retired San Diego Police Officer Matt Weathersby.
The $5 entrance fee gets you a bag of Mission Tortilla Chips to use to dip away to your hearts’ content - sampling all the guacamole you can eat from the more than thirty competing teams - and then having an opportunity to vote for your favorite avocado-based concoction.
To participate in the competition will cost $25 and there still may be time to sign up individually or as a team of up to eight people.
The participating teams will compete in three divisions - Law Enforcement, Kiwanis, and Open/Public - all for a chance to win the “highly coveted” Guacamole Cup.
Calavo Growers, Inc. donated the more than 2,000 pounds of fresh avocados to be used by the various teams while Jordano’s supplied the onions, tomatoes, cilantro and jalapenos.

Starting at 1:30 p.m., after public votes are tallied, the top three teams from each division will have fresh batches of their guacamole judged by a panel of local celebrities comprised of the media, law enforcement, and the community.
So as not to feel left out, your ears will also be able to do some feasting on the sounds of the Chula Vista High School Mariachi Band.
Also expect a silent auction and raffle, with the proceeds from this event benefiting SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes (S4EA), a community-based sports program supporting athletes with developmental disabilities.
The event is also co-sponsored by San Diego Park & Recreation-Therapeutic Recreation Services.
