Yoga to Sound: live beats and vinyasa

Nearly eight years ago, the Kava Lounge opened doors at their inconspicuous Middletown location with the intention of "promoting cultural unity through music, art, and dance."

Countless events have since taken place under this banner and, accordingly, In-Stead's debut production on Sunday, September 23 promises to be an exceptional example of how this ethos can come to fruition.

Headed by "Eco Thug" Sonia Weksler, In-Stead's mission is to replace "default options in mainstream culture with environmentally and socially conscious alternatives" by supporting "independent businesses, artists, and organizations in our local community who approach their work with sustainability in mind."

For Weksler, that includes social media, documentary films, and community events such as the In-Stead kick-off on the 23rd, dubbed Yoga to Sound.

The 75-minute class starts at 7 p.m. and is billed as "a yoga class for SD's beat scene and music heads, Kava Lounge lovers, and In-Stead supporters."

Led by Niki Saccareccia, the slow flow Vinyasa series will focus on breath work and postures that support overall well-being accompanied by live electronic improvisationalist Santino Romeri of the exploratory beat outfit Illuminauts.

The gallery will also be curated with an upcycled art installation by Tara Nichole.

$16 includes a kava (calming root beverage) toast before class, a green juice toast after provided by Greenfix Organic Smoothie, and admission to the Local Sounds Family Matters showcase next door ($5 without yoga) highlighting some of the resident talent that has made Kava Lounge the epicenter of forward-thinking electronic music in San Diego:
