Tess Gerritsen was supposed to arrive on Thursday, and teach a writing workshop at San Diego Writers, Ink, but: Hurricane Sandy. Gerritsen will teach on Sunday (November 4), offering Secrets of Creativity from 5 to 7 p.m. She will stay for a Q & A session at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday after the class and the public is invited to attend the free event and meet the author.

Gerritsen grew up in San Diego, is a retired physician, and the author of 24 novels, including a series that was turned into Rizzoli & Isles, a TNT television series. I perused her blog to see what advice she has about writing thrillers.

How do writers create a climax in their stories? "Tension," Gerritsen writes. "This is not merely action; it’s the fear and adrenaline that precedes the horrible thing you know is coming. The longer you can draw out that tension, the longer you sustain that sense of imminent jeopardy, the more thrilling the scene."
Tess Gerritsen's The Secrets of Creativity: Where to Find Ideas and Nurture Them will take place at The Ink Spot (710 13th St Studio 210). The cost of the two-hour workshop is $30-36. Registration can be completed online.
