Michael Trigilio talks about the mysticism behind music technology

How can we understand desire and sin with nothing but a square-wave and a frequency modulation?

As part of the Upgrade! San Diego series, media artist, UCSD professor, and retired Zen priest Michael Trigilio will be talking about his recent works in sound and electronics at 5 p.m. tomorrow evening at the SDSU Downtown Gallery (725 West Broadway).

“Michael’s work is inspired by material that balances sarcasm and prayer, giving rise to works that examine religion, humor, narcissism, and demystification,” the Facebook event reads.

“His recent digital film, Bodhisattva, Superstar (2010), was recently included in the 2010 HERE NOT THERE exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.

“In Fall 2010 Michael has begun an ambitious collaboration with Katie Faulkner, artistic director of San Francisco’s Little Seismic Dance. Michael and Katie were invited to a two-week residency at the Maggie Allesse National Center for Choreography where they made the dance film BRINK (2011) and began plans for a public dance-media project called We Don’t Belong Here (2011).”

Trigilio’s collaborative project Speculative Religious Instruments Laboratories posts on their website:

“Questions we ask ourselves at SRE Laboratories: What kind of fuzz-pedal would the Pope use to explain Medieval apologia? What synthesizer will bring Satori during Zazen? How can we understand desire and sin with nothing but a square-wave and a frequency modulation? And so on. . .”
