How Skateboards are Like Quilts; it’s all in the Elevation

As the third skateboard exhibition this year (that I’m aware of), Full Deck: A Short History of Skate Art opening this Sunday, October 7th, clearly demonstrates its movement from outsider art to fine art. The first exhibition was held in San Diego at the Museum of Man and the second at the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA). Both exhibitions closed in September. The Museum of Man focused on the skate art of contemporary indigenous youth, while MODA’s exhibition examined at the elements of design found in skateboard graphics. The Cannon Art Gallery will feature decks from the 60s through the present to allow the viewer to look at the history of this relevant art form.

To drop-in on the show before the general opening, stop by the gallery this Saturday evening from 5 to 7 for the opening reception. Hosted by the Carlsbad Friends of the Arts, the reception will feature the always-delicious hors d’oeuvres made by volunteers and an interesting crowd of artists and art lovers.

In addition to the Family Open Studios Plus, Saturday November 17, the gallery will feature two special events: Teen Open Studios on October 20 from 11a.m. to 3p.m. and a lecture by Palomar professor Alan Lechusza Aquallo on November 8 about skate culture’s impact on indigenous youth. As the epicenter for skateboarding, it’s time for us to embrace not only the art, but also the sport. Just as quilts were finally elevated to a higher art status, the Carlsbad art community is borrowing boards from the “street” (more likely private collections) for a show that is sure to be enjoyed by all. The exhibition runs through December 30, 2012.
