The group begins with a short round of introductions and a set of guidelines for the hour. "It settles the room, quiets the mind, and prepares the writer to step forward to meet the blank page free of expectation," Brooks told me.

Each week Brooks chooses "a highly-caffeinated prompt--a line of dialogue, a topic from one of my favorite writing books, a first line from a published novel" to kick of the writing hour and inspire creativity. The prompt is given 15-25 minutes of writing time and then volunteers read what they've written.
"The best part is when you can feel the collective energy come together yet everyone occupies their own space with fingers tapping along their keyboards and pens moving along their page," Brooks said.
The sessions don't offer critique, only a space to write and share. "If time permits, I'll talk briefly about the creative process, how to overcome blocks, negate fear, and offer strategies to help writers write." Brooks added that her biggest advice for new writers is to join a "tribe" or weekly writing group because accessing a time and place consistently "honors one's creativity and help eliminate some of the self-doubt and aloneness that comes from being a writer."
Elle Brooks hosts Wake Up & Write! every Wednesday from 7-8 a.m. at The Ink Spot (710 13th Street, Studio 210). The fee for the session is $5 and all levels are welcome.
