Checking Out Science Center Membership Cards from the Library

Membership cards for the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center are available for check out at San Diego public libraries. One membership card grants two adults and up to six children entry to the Science Center's exhibitions, including Kid City, the Gallery of Illusions and Perceptions, Look! Touch! Listen!, and beginning May 26th, Grossology. The normal entry fee is 11.75 for adults and 9.75 for kids or seniors. A membership card also provides discounts on tickets to IMAX films in the dome theater: $10.75 for adults, $9 for juniors/seniors (down from $15.75 and $12.75).

The program (library item) named Check It Out!, was launched May 24th and is set to run for two years. The Science Center's partnership with the San Diego Library is sponsored by ScholarShare College Savings Plan, and amounts to two membership cards at each of the 36 libraries. Already several of the cards that aren't checked out yet are listed as "on hold" or "in transit," on the San Diego Public Library's website. Each card can be checked out for up to 10 days at a time.

In a press release hyping up the program, Dr. Jeffrey Kirsch, Executive Director of the Fleet said, “By eliminating price as a barrier, our partnership... provides the widest possible audience of children and families easy access to the science education and hands-on fun that the Fleet offers year-round. We’re thrilled to partner on this unique effort, which makes a Fleet membership as simple for a family to check out as a book or DVD, and furthers our mutual commitment to education.”

The new traveling exhibition Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body, focuses on the strange smells, body fluids, and flat out logistical weirdness of being human. According to the Science Center's website, the exhibits will offer a chance to "Climb a large-scale replica of human skin," and "Explore the role of the kidney in a virtual reality experience, Urine: The Game.”
