Weekend: Girls on Skates or Arts & Crafts?

So, my precious Saturday evening will probably entail one of the following activities:

If I feel mellow, Twigg's Coffee House (4590 Park Boulevard) is playing host to a craft fair that will have small things for sale; random stuff like cup koozies, jewelery, and hand-tooled leather goods. Can you say, gift shopping? The event starts up at 7 PM and is free to get in. The Reader's own Ed Bedford just identified Twigg's quiche as "opium dream" good, so there's another reason to head to the University Heights cafe.

If mellow isn't in the cards, I'll probably make the trek down to National City to watch the SoCal Derby women's roller derby team take on the Ventura County Ven Dolls. I picked up a flyer at a bike race earlier in the week. This'll be a good chance to watch girls with names like Goldiknocks and T-Bone put on fishnet stockings and hit other girls with equally inventive names hard enough to knock some fillings loose.

It's not just gladiatorial girl power, though that is an admittedly big draw for participants and fans alike. There are actually winners, losers, points, strategies, and a complicated set of rules that spectators are almost sure to not understand; so it's just like any non-mainstream sport and therefore 100% hip.

The bout will take place at Skate SD (700 E. 24th Street) in National City, doors at 6, game at 7. Tickets are $15 at the door, but they can be bought in advance for $12 at socalderby.com with discounts for military members and EMTs. Kids under 6 are free so parents can have the joy of hearing their toddler say, "mommy, when I grow up I wanna play roller derby!"
