News on the local theater front is a Dickensian best and worst of possibilities, since two fine productions must close.
MORE LIFE:
Guys and Dolls and Mixtape - Lamb's Players has extended the runs of its current shows: Guys and Dolls now plays through April 1; Mixtape, on a three-year roll at the Horton Grand, through April 29.
Visiting Mr. Green - the North Coast Rep has added an extra week for Jeff Baron's comedy-drama about an unlikely bond - through March 18.
The Car Plays - Also by popular demand, the La Jolla Playhouse has added two dates for these wild rides in parked cars: four performances on Saturday, March 10 and four more on Sunday, March 11. Times: 3:00, 4:30, 7:00, and 8:30. Car Plays is the second of the playhouse's Without Walls (WoW) series. Both site-specific productions (the first was Susurrus at the San Diego Botanical Garden) have been so successful the theater will host a WoW Festival in October, 2013, including a reprise of Car Plays and commissioned work by playwright Naomi Iizuka and puppeteer Basil Twist.
LAST CALL:
A Raisin in the Sun - This Sunday, March 4, Moxie Theater must close one of its finest efforts ever. Mark Christopher Lawrence and M'Lafi Thompson head a terrific ensemble cast in Lorraine Hansberry's classic drama. It's tough to see this one go.
In the Wake- The San Diego Rep's Sam Woodhouse calls Lisa Kron's funny, thought-provoking work "a rarity: a play about the 21st century written in the 21st century." Kron's summing up of where we are closes Sunday, March 4.
HAT TRICK.
Delicia Turner Sonnenberg directed A Raisin in the Sun and In the Wake and Carpool, one of the Car Plays. I can't recall such a burst of outstanding directorial work over such a short period of time.
