On June 24th the San Diego Polo Club will be hosting Chukkers for Charity, a fundraiser for Prince Harry’s pet foundation, Sentebale. A match of Polo, referred to as the Sport of Kings, is divided into six periods called chukkers.
Translated, the word sentebale means “forget me not”. The mission of the foundation, which the brawny Brit royal cofounded with the second prince of Lesotho, is to aid children whose lives have been shattered following the death of a parent. Like Prince Harry, the Lesotho prince also lost a parent in a car crash.
A landlocked country engulfed within South Africa, Lesotho is small, impoverished and hard hit by the HIV/AID pandemic. The spare heirs formed Sentebale in order to provide effective and efficient social services for its orphaned, disabled and otherwise vulnerable children.
According to Lindsey Chronert, Polo Manager of the San Diego Polo Club, Sunday’s match is a promotional effort on behalf of the Club to produce internationally recognized events. Chronert explained that the Club has been a long time supporter of local charities. "In late September, we will host charity events for the San Diego Symphony and San Diego Opera.”
The 2012 season's Opening Day drew more than 2,000 cheering attendees, a record high for the 26 year old SoCal club. Matches are held every Sunday throughout the summer.
Although the San Diego Polo Club would welcome Prince Harry’s attendance at a future tournament, the grinning shock-topped rogue will not be gracing this year’s event. Sunday’s match will, however, include African music and dance, as well as a silent auction affording attendees the opportunity to win a $17,000 pair of CJ Charles diamond and emerald earrings.
Ticket prices for the inaugural event that consists of two hour and a half long matches that begin at 12:30 PM and end at 7:00 PM range from $20-$75. The Club is located at 14555 El Camino Real in Rancho Santa Fe.
