This past Sunday, Jeanne Kelley, author of Salad for Dinner: Complete Meals for All Seasons, signed copies of her new book for guests in the third installation of Good Earth/Great Cooks at Del Mar’s Chino Farm. Milane Christiansen of Vintage Works and Chino Farm have collaborated to create an on-going series that pairs cookbook releases with a farm setting. Milane Christiansen, the long-time owner of The Book Works in Del Mar has (thankfully) not given up on the book world, but rather transferred her tremendous skill for creating something lovely (in her former bookstore) to something more ephemeral, yet still accessible. Chino Farm inspires and supplies chefs far and wide with unusual and incredible seasonal ingredients.

There was a good-sized crowd of food lovers: people getting books signed, nibbling samples, visiting friends, and buying produce from the farm stand. Ms. Kelley had created a delicious salad especially for the event. Served in radicchio leaves, the mixed vegetable salad, wheat berries, and feta with a lemon vinaigrette bode well for the rest of her recipes. The Stone Brewing Company was also on-hand offering friendly pours of their beers and visitors were given samples of olive oil from 36º Altomonte. The occasional gusty breeze didn’t detract from the otherwise perfect weather for this outdoor event.

The Good Earth/Great Cooks series presented by Milane Christiansen and Chino Farm have authors lined up for future book signing events, but no specific dates as yet. Press and is therefore, beautifully done. Copies of the book are available through Chino Farm or [email protected]. I didn’t leave without my own copy, signed and ready for use! Looking forward to trying many of the recipes contained in the book, I’ve already found what is sure to become my personal favorite (incidentally the last, and only non-salad recipe): Chocolate Cream Pie. I agree with Ms. Kelley, dessert is deserved if you’re eating salad!
