Eight high school surf teams across the county are looking for a good, clean break... tomorrow at the first High School Surf Showdown at Seaside Reef in Cardiff.
The contest, presented by Carlsbad-based eyewear brand Spy Optic and Sun Diego Boardshops, will pit high school surf teams from Carlsbad, Point Loma, San Dieguito, Torrey Pines, San Marcos, Granite Hills, University City, and Rancho Buena Vista against each other. Unlike most surf events where individuals square off against one another, tomorrow's competition will be more like an abbreviated baseball game, with referees, coaches calling timeouts and putting in substitutes, and professional surfers Joel Tudor, Nate Tyler, and Parker Coffin judging the team's performance.
In addition to bragging rights, the winning team will be awarded $1,000 from Sun Diego Boardshops as well as a $2,000 donation made in their name from Spy Optic to the California Surf Museum.
The competition begins at 7am running throughout the day with the awards ceremony commencing at 6:15 p.m.
