On August 17th, the Leo Carrillo Film Festival kicks off with a benefit dinner and screening of “Phantom of the Opera” starring the park’s namesake, at the Leo Carrillo Historic Ranch Park in Carlsbad. An evening not to miss, it’s one of the most entertaining ways to support one of our local historic parks. Bring your blankets, low-backed chairs, warm clothes, and a flashlight. After a pleasant meal, including a vegetarian option if you order it in advance, the Phantom will delight in an outdoor setting.

Only 150 tickets are available for sale until August 10th, so be sure to get yours as soon as possible! No tickets will be sold at the door. Your ticket price of $30 includes dinner, an opportunity to win a door prize, live entertainment, a silent auction, and the ever popular, popcorn.

If you miss the Dinner & a Movie benefit, the film festival continues to run every Friday afterward through September 21st. It’s free, but reservations are required and will admit up to four people per household. The gates open at 5pm. It’s fun to get there early, set up your blanket and/or chairs, and enjoy a drink or bite to eat with friends and family or take a tour of the hacienda before the featured film. The peacocks gracefully ascend en masse into the trees as the movie begins, with the occasional birdcall as a specialty of the house. By the way, sport the sensible shoes for the evening and bring along some bug spray (just in case) – it is a ranch after all!
