Today's stage of the Tour de France is a "time trial". A time trial is individual riders racing against the clock. There is no peloton and there is no drafting behind other riders. There are no teammates to set a pace or competitors to chase down.
Time trials show up two or three times during the tour. There was a time trial the day before the tour officially started to determine who would wear the yellow jersey for the opening stage. This opening foray was only four miles.
Today's time trial is 41.5 kilometers or about 25.75 miles. Great Britain's Bradley Wiggins won the stage with a time 00:51:24. Wiggins retained the yellow jersey as the overall leader.
Tomorrow is a recovery day. In the first nine stages the riders have covered 1,008.5 miles. They're cycling over 100 miles per day so the rest day is well deserved. On Tuesday they tackle what some believe to be the most difficult mountain in France.
