If you were out gallivanting through San Diego last night, you may have noticed the absence of local theater people in the city streets. This is because they were all gathered (and dressed quite fancily, I might add) at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego for the 2011 Craig Noel Awards.
Dea and Osborn Hurston were among the theater-goers in attendance.
The event, hosted by The San Diego Theatre Critic’s Circle, began with drinks and light fare (provided by Giuseppe’s Fine Catering) in the museum’s lobby, and then moved into the auditorium, where members of the Critic’s Circle presented awards for performance, direction, and design.
Among those awarded, B. Slade won Outstanding Lead Performance in a Musical, Male, for his performance in “The Who’s Tommy,” at San Diego REPertory Theatre, and Karson St. John and Linda Libby shared the award for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Musical, Female, for their roles in “Cabaret” at Cygnet Theatre and “Gypsy: A Musical Fable” at ion Theatre, respectively.
Kirsten Greenidge won Outstanding New Play for “Milk Like Sugar,” a piece commissioned and produced by La Jolla Playhouse.
Yolanda Braunagel, wife of the late theater critic Don Braunagel, established a fund in her husband’s name to honor achievements at local theaters with fewer than 200 seats. This year, the first annual award for Outstanding Work at a Small Theater went to ion Theatre.
The evening also included a performance by Randall Hickman (winner of Outstanding Featured Performance in a Musical, Male for his role in “Hairspray” at Moonlight Stage Productions) and Doug Davis (who had also been nominated for the award for his role in “Hairspray,”) who sang “You’re Timeless to Me.”
