Over 150 artists submitted their work to the exhibition titled, "In Search of Wonder Women," on display at the Women's Museum of California through February 24. Each submission was to "evoke the essence of women as interpreted through the artist's eye." Curator Li Huai (artist and visual arts faculty member at UCSD) encouraged "artistic and conceptual innovation and experimentation in the exploration of the historical, cultural, economic, social, and political dimensions of this topic." I presume by "this topic," she meant, "the fabulous female gender." Or, to be more specific in Huai's own words, "creative works that define or demonstrate the awe-inspiring nature of women, past, present, and future."
La Chacha, by Claudia Cano
For this exhibition, Huai selected 47 pieces of art crossing all kinds of mediums, including video, sculpture, photography, and mixed media. Though she curated the show, long time San Diego art critic and current Senior Grant and Art Writer for the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego Robert Pincus served as juror.
Robert Pincus
From the 47 pieces curated, Pincus selected three pieces that stood out above the rest: one main winner, who will receive $1000, and two runners up, who will receive gift bags and accolades. The winners will be announced at the opening reception, which takes place on tonight, at 6 p.m.
