When I am old, I shall wear sparkles. Seeing the many older women shimmering in the Schulman Auditorium, this is always my first thought at the poetry reading held every December in Carlsbad by the Magee Park Poets. This past Wednesday evening at their 24th anthology release, it was no different.
After a fierce competition to be chosen, the poets had the opportunity to read their selected poems aloud at the Dove Library. It is one of the most rewarding cultural events we have available to us in North County and it’s free. You don’t have to be a poet to enjoy hearing poetry read aloud by its creator. It’s a very different experience from reading poems silently; I liken it to performance art. The poets’ appearance and especially their voices, bring the words to life and give them even more flavor. Hearing an Irish-accented woman read about left-handed mythologies or the young man who zips through a poem about the bar scene lends itself to the mise en scène on-stage. Or the woman who just celebrated her 66th wedding anniversary, called her and her husband “WWII people” reading a love poem about her marriage. There was not a dry eye in the house.
Although you’ll have to wait until next December for the Magee Park Poets 2014 Anthology release party, mark your calendar now and then look for other poetry reading events in your area. In fact, tomorrow, December 7, at 1:00p.m, one of the co-editors of the anthology, Ishamael von Heidrick-Barnes will read from his new book, Intimate Geography: Poems as part of A Life of Art: Living Poetry program at MiraCosta College, the San Elijo campus, in Encinitas.
