Triple crown

The final stage of the triple crown was completed yesterday in Balboa Park. No it was not the Belmont Stakes. We’re not talking about the horse racing triple crown.

We’re talking about the half marathon triple crown of San Diego County.

The three events involved are the Carlsbad Half Marathon in January, the La Jolla Half Marathon in April, and the America’s Finest City Half Marathon in August. Runners who have done all three receive a special commemorative medal in the finish area of the AFC Half.

For anyone looking to stay focused for an entire year of running, the triple crown is ideal. Besides training, it does take some planning. All three of the events sell out every year.

Anyone looking to do Carlsbad needs to register today. That is not a joke. I used to think it was safe to wait until Halloween to register for Carlsbad but that is no longer the case. Carlsbad does allow runners to transfer a bib number if they become unable to participate so why wait?

Anyone who wants to make Carlsbad their first half marathon also needs to start training before the end of August. That will provide five months of training to get up to 13.1 miles.
