La Jolla isn't known for being the most affordable date location, but this week's installment of $40 Date reveals that planning a date on $40 is completely possible.
Head toward the Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla (700 Prospect St) where John Valadez's celebration and depiction of the Mexican American experience is now on display. Valadez portrays Mexican Americans in highly symbolic pieces, blending popular culture (film, car shows), mythic figures (monstrous sea creatures, indigenous warriors), and surrealist landscapes (Santa Ana fires, stormy seas). General admission is $10 or $5 for students. Free two-hour parking is available around the museum.

Then take Prospect St down to Puesto (1026 Wall St) in order to view the rows of restaurants, boutiques, galleries, and the glittering ocean view.

Grab some street-style tacos, a bowl, or salad at this new eatery. Menu items range from $6.95 for two tacos to $8.95 for a bowl. We had the chicken al pastor bowl and the carne asada bowl, heaping with black beans, Mexican rice, onion and cilantro, salsas, melted cheese, and a hearty corn tortilla.
