Latin Jams, Organic Cuisine, and Craft Beverages: LoCura Release Party at Conscious Playground

Bay Area reggae and Latin groove outfit LoCura will be celebrating the release of their second album, Semilla Caminante, at the inaugural production by local multimedia, performance, and gourmet organic cuisine collective Conscious Playground.

Semilla Caminante means ‘traveling seed,’” says Spanish/Croatian vocalist Kata Miletich.

“It’s a big idea about the potential that we hold as humans. Semilla is the seed of possibility. [On this album] I talk about a lot of the people in our lives, the amazing work they are doing growing food, and the changes we can make through our art.”

Making change through art and food is central to the traveling Conscious Playground, a collaboration between Kristie Aguirre of the Kava Lounge and organic, veggie-friendly food trucks Gage’s Global Gourmet (run by Ayurvedic-trained Chef Gage aka DJ Wolfgang Von Cope of Merge Life & Music) and the Green Truck.

“So much food is just frozen, processed stuff coated in a weird flurry of chemicals and fried in hydrogenated oil,” Green Truck owner David Holtze told the Reader in December.

“In the Green Truck, everything comes from scratch, nothing is frozen, and the produce is a seasonal selection from local organic farmers.”

The movement is more popular in San Diego than you may think. The county has 317 growers registered as organic - more than any other county in the nation.

Local, sustainable food is also a key theme on Semilla Caminante, which sees LoCura expand from a trio to a full band taking cues from genres including Flamenco, cumbia, ska, salsa, a little bit of rock.

“I feel that a lot of times there’s a struggle of wanting to be hopeful about politics - voting for legislation and local bills and senators - but I also feel like the real changes I can make are with how I use my dollars,” say Miletich.

“Who am I supporting with my money - big corporations or farmers at the market or even myself by growing in my own backyard? For me, making those changes, understanding where food is coming from, where it’s grown, and how everyone is being treated and paid, it makes all the difference. It makes me feel better to eat simpler food.”

Tonight’s Conscious Playground soft opening begins at 7 p.m. with dinner, DJs, and specialty drinks from the Kava Lounge followed by live jams from LoCura just after 10.

Make the cliffs fall, put up more warnings, fine beachgoers?
