Circle Circle Dot Dot Deconstructs Local Drag Sensation

San Diego’s premiere community-based theatre group, Circle Circle Dot Dot, is opening their third full-length production tomorrow at 10th Avenue Theatre and Arts Centre (930 10th Avenue) Downtown.

While previous productions have drawn inspiration from the cast’s own romantic misadventures and the local Live Action Role Play community, tomorrow sees the debut of a stage-play based on the life of local drag queen Grace Towers as told by the troupe of performance-artists, writers, directors, puppeteers, designers, and musicians.

“It starts in his childhood with his emotionally abusive mother,” says company member Soroya Rowley, “and ends with this beautiful man becoming one of San Diego's most fabulous drag queens.”

According to the Deconstruction of a Drag Queen's invite:

While Michael's mother fantasizes that her only son will grow-up to become a Doctor, Michael is busy trying on his sister's dresses and dancing to female pop artists of the 80's. For Circle Circle dot dot's next original community-based production we went under the wigs and into the closets of some of the most delicious Drag Performers of San Diego and found that the most important ingredient to becoming a true diva is bravery. In our most ambitious project to date- we will be taking our audiences into the world of Stilettos, a one-stop gender-bending performance destination to join our ringleader the Duchess Hunny Mustard as she puts on a very special production that unveils the crowning of their newest Queen. Based on the true story of local drag sensation Grace Towers.

Written by Katherine Harroff in collaboration with members of the Drag Artist Performance Community of San Diego and choreographed by Anne Gehman & Anthony Diaz (Grace Towers), Deconstruction of a Drag Queen runs through April 21 and features performances by Shaun Tuazon, Julio Jacobo, Melissa Coleman-Reed, Kevane La'Marr Coleman, James P. Darvas, and Justin Warren Martin.

Tickets: $10 (Groups of 10 or more), $15 (Student, Senior, Military), $20 (General), $25 (April 6th-Opening night reception & Drag Ball).
