Urban Day Glo – A Glimpse at the 9th Annual Los Angeles Burning Man Decompression

Festivities were well under way when my companions and I arrived in Chinatown around 3:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles Historic State Park, a retired Southern Pacific Transportation Company maintenance yard that sits along the Metro Gold light rail line and the remnants of the old Zanja Madre aqueduct.

An Indian summer sun gushed over dilapidated ginseng, poultry, and seafood warehouses and the downtown skyline jutted skyward to the west like something out of Blade Runner.

We recalibrated from the drive by accessorizing at a free clothing tent and then promptly grabbed some adult refreshments at the beer garden, where we ran into a girl who was wearing the same get-up as my friends Joe and Liberty — a festive interpretation of Sonya Blade from Mortal Kombat.

I went back for more Stone Pale Ale, and met these bright-eyed locals.

Down the way, the crowd was still growing but the roller disco was in full swing.

Come sunset, thousands of partygoers were traipsing around in odd attire as the scenery blossomed like a hallucination.

Among the 80+ performers were Treavor Moontribe, beatfreaque, Bass Mechanic (San Diego), Hobotech, DJ Wolfie, Pumpkin, darkMatter, and divaDanielle. As such, we partook in ample dance and jammage.

And what’s a Burning Man party without fire dancers and rocket-powered incendiary metal art?
