On November 19, the Barona Cultural Center & Museum will open Rock of Ages: Contemporary Music Traditions on the Barona Reservation, an exhibition intended to showcase today's native culture of singer-songwriters, rock bands, country-western players, and other popular music, done (quoting from the official press release) "reservation-style."
"Music and musicians tell great stories through song and memories," says Cheryl Hinton, director of the Barona Cultural Center & Museum. "We recently interviewed the many musicians on the Barona Indian Reservation and this exhibition offers an engaging look at their stories, their teachers, and how they got their start in music."
The history of music on the Barona Indian Reservation is rich, diverse, and rooted in tradition. Today's contemporary musicians carry on the tuneful tradition through genres of rock, corridos, country-western, and folk music.
Rock of Ages will feature musicians who have records and CDs; professional musicians; those who play music as a hobby; and those who have shared their musical talents with the community during times of sorrow and celebration. The exhibition also celebrates the dedicated musicians who are passing down their love of music to a new generation, to continue this Barona tradition.
The Barona Cultural Center & Museum is located on the Barona Indian Reservation at 1095 Barona Road in Lakeside, one mile north of the Barona Resort & Casino. http://www.baronamuseum.org
In the new KPBS series We Shall Remain, Museum Director Cheryl Hinton appears in two mini-documentaries on Barona history, The Rebellion at San Diego Mission and The Barona Inter-Tribal Dictionary and Cultural Revitalization, as shown in the video below.
