Candlelight Memorial Vigil for the Homeless

The San Diego Rescue Mission's 10th annual candlelight vigil for the homeless takes place this Sunday, November 6.

"The interfaith event is designed to create awareness for the 10,000 men, women and children living each day homeless in San Diego that should not have to die on the streets," the website reads.

According to a January report from San Diego's Regional Task Force on the Homeless, that figure is closer to 9,000 - still a 19 percent increase in the county’s homeless population since 2008

"Last year more than 200 caring community members honored the 44 men and 6 women who passed away," the website reads.

"Several participants carried a pair of shoes with a tag attached, listing each deceased person’s name.. Each individual’s name was read aloud."

Sunday's procession begins at 3:15 pm at the San Diego Rescue Mission and will walk about a mile to a 4 p.m. candlelight vigil at the San Diego County Administration Center (West Side on Harbor Drive), stopping for prayer at three churches along the way.

Sixty-one people in the procession will carry a pair of shoes representing the 54 male and 7 female homeless individuals who died on the streets of San Diego County in the last year.
