The 15th annual North Park Festival of Arts was a snapshot of many things awesome about San Diego. An estimated 35,000 people in sunshine dress strolled around the four blocks east of 30th on University, browsing vendors of fine art, food, jewelry, knick-knacks, doo-dads, holistic cures, and Tatooine vogue 80’s apparel.
Bikes lined the road at a free valet, where new arrivals meandered off to listen to music at one of the six stages or drink beer in the afternoon sun from the 34 breweries represented at the craft beer block ($25 in advance). Performances included the likes of local rads the Kabbs, d/wolves, The Heavy Guilt, Low Volts, Shiva Trash, Grand Tarantula, and a variety of world music.
The beer garden on 31st offered brews from Karl Strauss, Stone, Green Flash, and Duvel at $5 a cup, though I did score a complimentary pint for no good reason near the end of the day after catching a piece of ballistic popcorn in my mouth on the third try. Revelers chatted loudly in the street and couples spun around to rock and roll jams beneath the lazy watch of multiple well-dressed canines, including this little charro:
