Daren Scott's Maiden Voyage

Daren Scott, longtime San Diego actor, recently directed his first show: Sweet Storm at New Village Arts. "Every serious actor should direct at least once," he says. "I tried to be as prepared as possible, but also worried about overthinking it. And that's the balancing act of directing, at least for me. (If all this sounds a bit bipolar, then good, you're with me.) I found myself obsessed with the play. Thinking about it ALL the time! Mail stayed unopen, calls and emails unreturned (unless having to do with the show), dishes in the sink...you get the picture. I wondered if this was a positive state of mind, good for the play or not. I'm sure there's a healthy balance (that word again) that very experienced directors have. Another thing: I have a cab driver sensibility and usually speak in stream of consciousness. This does not work for directing. I had to learn how to edit, be more concise. What did work: I love hearing other people's opinions. I may not use the idea but perhaps it will birth another. Finally comes opening night. I know it's such a showbiz cliche, but things can come together better than before. And they did! Would I want to direct again? Sure. Was it all worth it? You bet it was."
