In Guad We Trust: The Virgin Revisited

“The Virgin of Guadalupe’s feast day is celebrated in Mexico on December 12,” says Art Fist Collective’s Enrique Limon, a curator of Saturday’s In Guad We Trust art show.

“It’s a huge holiday. Regardless of your religious orientation, the Virgin is the biggest icon down there. So I wanted to assemble local artists from our border region — be it TJ, San Diego, Mexicali, or people from around here who have moved on to greener pastures - and I wanted them to interpret carte blanche what this symbol means to them. There’s no limitation on the image or theme. We’ll have everything from conventional Virgin images to those which may be a bit risqué. It’s not the intention to be controversial, but the platform is there for that.”

Anything but a vestal himself in San Diego’s art world, Limon has enlisted over 30 artists to freely interpret the Catholic icon.

“For some of the artists, it’s their first time out,” says Limon. “Others I recruited after seeing their work at the Art Squat in September.”

Among them will be Mario Torero, who painted the Virgin mural in Chicano Park, and Mark Patterson, the exhibition’s “token white guy” and man behind the “Surfing Madonna” mosaic that was installed by a team of artists posing as construction workers on Encinitas Boulevard in April.

“Mark will be bringing the central panel of the mosaic on Saturday,” says Limon. “It’s her first pilgrimage to the Barrio.”

Chihuahua, Mexico-born artist Moistrix says he’ll be presenting an image of the Virgin posed in the iconic stance of Marilyn Monroe, doubled over with her dress billowing skywards.

“I wanted to emphasize that celebrities were around back then and to make people think about how over time perspectives shift about what a celebrity is,” says Moistrix.

The free show will feature the Border Corps performance troupe, live painting, music from Saul Q and Latin Lovers, and seasonal South-of-the-border beverages.

“I secured a contraband shipment of Noche Buena, a special Mexican beer that only comes out this time of year,” says Limon. “It’s kind of a yuletide Budweiser with a little Mexi twist.”
