With Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show set to open at the Old Globe Theatre on September 23, lead actor James Barbour, cast as intergalactic “sweet transvestite” Frank-N-Furter, has left the production after it was made public that he admitted to seducing a 15 year-old girl in a 2008 NYC sex prosecution (stemming from a 2001 incident).
Originally, Old Globe Executive Producer Lou Spisto said in an press release that Barbour "completed the conditions of his sentence, and he has continued his successful career as an actor on Broadway in The Tale of Two Cities and in a touring production of Camelot on stages nationwide, including San Diego's Civic Theatre…the Old Globe is confident that, in addition to being highly qualified for the role, he will continue to behave with absolute professionalism."
The next day, Spisto issued a NEW statement, announcing that Barbour is "regretfully" leaving the production "due to issues with his wife's pregnancy."
Barbour seemed to confirm this by posting on Facebook "As my amazing wife is progressing through the second pregnancy we've encountered some unexpected issues and I felt it vital to be with my family during this time."
However, according to the New York Times, in 2008 Barbour admitted that he fondled a 15 year-old girl in 2001, backstage after a Broadway performance of Jane Eyre, later engaging in oral sex with her.
Prosecutors reportedly dropped felony charges in return for Barbour pleading guilty to two counts of misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child. He received a sentence of sixty days jail time and was required to serve three years probation.
The Old Globe has said it will soon announce Barbour’s replacement in the role (according to Barbour’s Facebook post, he had no understudy).
