This Saturday, San Diego kids are taking part in the 4th annual Great Kindness Challenge, presented by the San Diego-based organization, Kids for Peace. Kids around the world download a 50-item checklist and then set off making nice. Some examples from this year's list are: hug a friend, pick up trash, send a card to a military family, thank a policeman, all around nice stuff. That is, except for one. I'm not so sure about the challenge to "cut out 10 hearts and leave them on 10 cars." Without the right direction, this could easily turn into an under-10 version of Saw. But I choose to give these kids the benefit of the doubt.
There's going to be a "Great Kindness Challenge Prep Party" on Friday, from 3 to 5 p.m. at 3303 James Drive in Carlsbad. There, children can "prepare for the big day as they bake cookies for firefighters, make 'Kindness Matters' posters, decorate hearts to leave on cars," and more. The actual challenge on Saturday begins at Cottonwood Creek Park and Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. Beginning with being nice at a park, and then strolling along doing kind things on the beach, the day will end with a bonfire celebration. Kumbaya, kiddies!
