An Art Exhibit like No Other: The Habitat House

The Habitat House is a single family home that displays art and where local Bands perform. Habitat is located at 1008 21st street in the Golden Hill neighborhood.

Paved sidewalk in front of Habitat House

The exhibit “Endless Summer, Volume 2” was displayed on August 27th and curated by Angella d ‘Avignon who lives at The Habitat House. Walking towards the home, I saw crowds of people outside drinking and talking or gathered around the MIHO Gastrotruck that was sitting in front of the house serving fresh sandwiches and cold beverages.

Inside, I didn’t know where to look first. Art adorned the walls, people walked from room to room, Dj, Crystal Mess played music, a bartender served beers. In the backyard, there was a Tepee setup where visitors could sit and talk, or just hang out and smoke cigarettes.

After exploring, I looked around and came upon an interesting drawing by Regan Russell, (above) titled “I Need Some Hot Stuff.” Another display that stood out was “Show Boat” (below) that was made out fabric, matches, and yarn by Lindsay Preston Zappas.

I had the chance to briefly speak with Dylan Ousley (below) who is a graphic designer and a housemate at the Habitat House. He said that once a month they try to put together an exhibit or a live show. He explained how it’s been well received in the area, that they have had great turnouts, and that they are constantly seeing new faces at these events.

Dylan Ousley

Walking in one last time, I saw people (below) gathered by the DJ, dancing to Whitney Houston’s, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.”
