Six Minutes of Street Fair Scenes and Tunes

Some point to Memorial Day as the true start of summer. Others say the season kicks off with the solstice on or about June 21. In Ocean Beach, however, summer begins on a Saturday in late June, when the OB Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off explodes on Newport Avenue.

This year was the fair's 30th. Tens of thousands of guests enjoyed music from more than 30 bands, rode on rides and slid on slides, checked out dozens of vendor booths, chatted with representatives from a range of local organizations, bathed in bountiful sunshine, and took in the overflowing visual beauty of the neighborhood.

For much of the day, the OB in HD team pointed our Canon HV-30 at the bands, the people, and the goings-on of the 2009 Ocean Beach Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off. This six-minute summary aims to capture the day's flavor and show why the fair is such a treasured event on the Ocean Beach calendar - and such a fitting kickoff to the glorious season of summer.

The fine bands heard and seen in the video - in order - include Old Devil, the Troubleweeds, the Paul Green School of Rock, the Shambles, John Taffola, the Corvelles, Bad Science Fiction, Blackbirdz, John Miller and the Payback, Comfort In Rage, Love and Groove, Stick Figure, and Agua Dulce.
