The only thing missing was the checkered flag, as the heavy neighborhood bar traffic started picking up speed around midnight! The late night party crowd returning to their own cars, cheered as car after car went zooming past faster and faster. The fast paced action peaked as usual, around 2 A.M. closing time, when a Police squad car answering a call came down Ray St. fast with all it's lights on and turned East on a side street. Just after the first squad car turned, the driver of a parked patron's car (aka "NorthParker") suddenly and without looking, decided to make an illegal U turn from the curb, and drive the "wrong way" up the one way street. As he made his "getaway" he looked up and saw yet another squad car also with it's full light bar on, "filling his windshield" while it's driver took evasive action in order to avoid a head on crash! The Officer driving this squad car exhibited superb defensive driving skills and single-handedly prevented what could have easily been yet another tragic alcohol related accident; turning it instead into another "Late Night Close Call", something that has become all too common in North Park's Residential neighborhoods. If one of SDPD's finest had not been at the wheel or if things had been just a little bit different, for that Officer, the bar patron and or all his passengers it may very well have been their "Last Call"... !
