A group of 15 immigrants were rescued by the Mexican navy after being left at sea for over 12 hours on Monday, September 9. The group had paid for travel to the United States, but was abandoned after the small boat experienced motor problems.
According to the Navy Secretariat, the immigrants were rescued near international waters, 33 kilometers northwest of Isla Coronados, Baja California. Those on the boat consisted of 14 men and one woman.
Smugglers have taken to the sea in recent years, attempting to smuggle immigrants and narcotics up the coast line more frequently.
