David Alvarez's political action committee has the unions, which to date have contributed more than one-half of a million dollars to be used for television spots and phonebanking efforts.
Nathan Fletcher's outside committee has its support in for-profit university system Bridgepoint Education as well as some deep-pocketed admirers in Qualcomm's Jacobs family.
The sole Republican in the race, Kevin Faulconer, has his big donors as well, that being the building and restaurant industries.
On October 5 those two entities put down some serious dough for the second-term councilmember representing San Diego's Second District.
For their part, the Building Industry of San Diego wrote a check to the pro-Faulconer group San Diegans to Protect Jobs and the Economy for a cool $50,000.
Of course, developers haven't just been tied to one political committee in support of Faulconer. Thomas Sudberry, owner of Sudberry Properties, and Douglas Manchester, owner of the UT San Diego and Grand Del Mar Resort, have each contributed $50,000 to the conservative Lincoln Club. Much of that cash has already been spent on glossy mailers bashing former GOP assemblyman turned Democratic mayoral candidate Nathan Fletcher.
But it's not just builders getting behind Faulconer. The restaurant and beverage industry is also tipping their cash-filled glass to Faulconer. The San Diego Restaurant and Beverage political action committee one-upped, make that ten-thousand upped, builders by writing checks totaling $60,000 to the San Diegans to Protect Jobs and the Economy.
The committee has yet to spend any of the cash.It remains to be seen whether the committee will set their sights on anti-Fletcher ads, a la the Lincoln Club, or extoll the virtues of their candidate of choice.
