Adam Brown has been held in custody since June 2008, after he surrendered himself to authorities. Brown approached a deputy in San Diego’s downtown courthouse and told the officer that he had killed his mother in their home.
“He said that he stabbed her,” the deputy testified at a murder trial in September of 2011. “I asked him if he had the knife and he said no, it was still in her.”
A jury swiftly declared Adam Brown guilty of murder, two years ago. But the same panel could not agree on whether or not Brown was sane at the time, so that question has been put before a new jury this week.
“There was no person on Earth that he loved more than his mother,” defense attorney Daniel Segura told a jury of 7 men and 5 women yesterday morning, October 3, 2013.
The jury was told that Adam Brown is the youngest of nine children raised by Leonore Rita Brown. Just days before her 35th birthday, in 1965, mother “Lee” gave birth to her baby boy Adam. The boy’s father, a Marine, died when Adam was still young; the mother had a career working for the INS and raised her family in a modest home in Oceanside.
Adam Brown was the one who stayed at that same home on Carolyn Circle; he lived in a bedroom directly adjacent to his mother, and cared for her everyday. In June 2008, Leonore Brown was 77 years old and recovering from hip replacement surgery. Her son Adam, then 42, gave her baths and changed her clothes and fed her.
“She was very sick, she was bedridden, Adam did everything for her,” the prosecutor for the case, Patricia Lavermicocca, agreed with the defense attorney on many points. “This is a very sad and tragic case.”
And the prosecutor conceded that “Adam is schizophrenic and delusional.”
But deputy district attorney Lavermicocca insists that Adam understood what he was doing when he plunged a knife into his mother’s skull; he was also aware that his actions were wrong – proven when he turned himself in to authorities.
Defense attorney Daniel Segura has the burden of proving that his client was insane, because there is a presumption of sanity in this trial. Adam Brown will turn 48-years-old next week, while trial continues before the Honorable Judge Harry Elias, in San Diego’s North County Superior Courthouse.
