The pro-David Alvarez political action committee Working Families for a Better San Diego set up by the local Labor Council is collecting some major checks from their fellow union members.
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union is the latest donor to give super-sized donations. Yesterday, the union wrote a check for $50,000 to pay for commercials, phone-banking, and other campaign related items in support of councilmember David Alvarez. In the past two weeks, the food workers union has given the committee a total of $150,000.
That money doesn't have much of a chance to accrue interest. Committee members are spending the cash almost as fast as it is coming in, most recently paying $20,000 to hire a political campaign consultant -- the disclosure does not reveal which consultant they hired.
But the food handlers union isn't the most giving union. That distinction goes to the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). To date, that group has given a total of $335,000. The most recent contribution came on September 30 and was listed on an October 2 disclosure, along with a expenditure of $10,000 to pay for "phone-banking."
And while the unions are giving away stacks of cash to the Democratic-endorsed candidate, big-name executives from private industry are putting their monetary support behind former State Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher. Most notably, it appears as if the entire Jacobs family has rallied behind the newly minted Democrat. Last week, we reported that Qualcomm founder Irwin Jacobs and his wife Joan each gave $1,000 to Fletcher's campaign committee. On October 1, their children followed in their footsteps. Debby Jacobs, Jeffrey Jacobs, Paul Jacobs, and Stacey Jacobs all gave $1,000.

In addition to the Jacobs clan, other Qualcomm executives fell in line in support of their colleague Fletcher, who was hired by the tech-giant last year.
Rick Valencia, Vice President of Qualcomm contributed a grand to Fletcher, as did Vice President of Corporate Development Howard Wright, Senior Staffing Specialist Jennifer Manfredi, Vice President of Government Affairs Shawn Covell, and Vice President of Division Council Fabian Connell -- as well as several others. In just one day, October 1, Fletcher received $7,000 from his colleagues at Qualcomm.
