The Port of San Diego celebrated a milestone yesterday (May 20) in its efforts to implement the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan, moving traffic along North Harbor Drive about 60 feet east between Navy Pier and the B Street Pier to accommodate what will eventually be a 105 foot wide public promenade along the San Diego bay front.
Phase 1 of the project is still about a year from being completed. Work will now begin on the area that will feature public gardens, shade pavilions, a café, visitor’s information center, and public restrooms.
“This project is driven by a simple concept: San Diego's waterfront should be for people, not cars,” said city council member Kevin Faulconer at a ceremony to mark the progress. Faulconer serves as chair of the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan Joint Powers Authority, and his 2nd council district encompasses the Downtown area.
The North Embarcadero project is being funded jointly by the Port, the city, and Civic San Diego (formerly the Centre City Development Corporation).
