Residents of Chula Vista have received a deluge of mailers from the Lorena Gonzalez campaign. Gonzalez, former CEO of the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council, AFL-CIO, is running against former Chula Vista council member Steve Castaneda for the 80th district assembly.
To date Cal-Acces records Gonzalez has raised $229,810 in campaign donations and Castaneda has collected $18,249.00.
Chula Vista resident and 2010 council candidate Jill Galvez observes, "Her imprudent use of her nuclear war chest of financial contributions would be akin to the U.S. bombing a tiny island nation on a daily basis--just to prove that it could and then gloat over the sounds of its own bombs.
"I wonder how many teaching jobs in the South Bay she could have saved if she had stopped airing commercials on CNN every fifteen minutes and donated the money to the schools. The way she has lavishly spent money on a one-sided campaign makes me fear for the new taxes we Californians voted on this year. Will she demonstrate the same immodesty and lack of restraint that we have seen in her campaign?"
Dorian Hargrove reported in the San Diego Reader on May 13 that "the Committee for Honesty and Accountability Opposed to Steve Castaneda for Assembly in 2013, sponsored by the California Teachers Association and the California Labor Federation, both union affiliated political committees, coughed up a total of $100,000 to spend on their anti-Castaneda ad campaign."
One flier put out by this independent expenditure committee features Castaneda with an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other and then suggests to the reader: "you be the judge."
But the information inside the flier misleads. Beneath the San Diego Union Tribune logo is this statement: "He flip-flops on his decisions so often it's not surprising that he switched parties from Republican to Democrat. It speaks to the credibility of the candidate."
While the statement is attributed to the Union Tribune it comes from Castaneda's 2008 opponent, Republican Scott Vinson, a real estate broker.
The Union Tribune campaign flier snippet about Castaneda and flip-flopping is taken from an article that includes this statement from the local democratic chair: "We're happy to endorse him [Steve Castaneda], county Democratic Party Chairman Jeff Durfee said. "He has a long record of working closely with other elected Democrats."
The election is Tuesday, May 21.
