Yesterday Southwest Strategies, the influence peddling boutique started by former San Diego Evening Tribune reporter Alan Ziegaus, filed an amendment to its lobbying registration. The latest disclosure reveals that Southwest has been retained by Fox Sports San Diego to gain "approval of City resolution in favor of broadcast coverage of SD Padres baseball games by Time Warner Cable, city-wide with communities north of the San Diego River most adversely affected."
As it happens, the very same day Southwest made its 4:40 p.m. filing, the council unanimously adopted a resolution saying:
"The City Council recognizes the importance of professional baseball in San Diego and encourages Time Warner Cable and Fox Sports San Diego to negotiate an agreement by Opening Day so that Time Warner Cable customers can watch their hometown team, the San Diego Padres, compete on television."
Among other clients, Southwest also handles superstore developer Walmart and Care Ambulance Service, Inc., of Orange, California, which is seeking to obtain a contract for "ambulance/EMT/paramedic services for the city of San Diego."
Back in 2004, Ziegaus was one of many registered city lobbyists, including Paul Robinson, who kicked in for the defense of then-city councilman Ralph Inzunza, currently doing a lengthy stretch in the United States Penitentiary at Atwater, California for his role in the Cheetahs strip club lobbying scandal.
