Big labor spends $75,000 for Democrat in fourth district council race

Campaign committee run by San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council lays out more than $75,000 for cause of Myrtle Cole, according to filing

With the special election for city council in San Diego's fourth city council district already shaping up as a classic money battle between labor unions and the city's well-heeled real estate and development interests, San Diego Works!, an independent expenditure campaign committee run by the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council, has already invested $75,700 on behalf of Democratic candidate Myrtle Cole, according to a March 19 filing posted online by the San Diego city clerk.

Cole - a former lieutenant with the San Diego Community College District Police Department, according to her campaign bio - is currently employed by the United Domestic Workers, a home health care workers union.

Recent donors to San Diego Works!, according to the disclosure report, have included United Auto Workers Region 5 of Pico Rivera ($250); California Federation of Teachers ($1,500); and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees ($2,000).

The campaign committees of Democratic congressman Juan Vargas and fellow Democrat Toni Atkins, a member of the state Assembly, each gave $800.

As previously reported, Annie Malcolm, wife of fallen port commissioner David Malcolm and president of Suncoast Financial, the couple's investment arm, has given $7500 to a fund calling itself San Diegans for Strong Neighborhoods in Support of Bruce Williams for City Council 2013.

Williams, a former Republican recently re-registered as a Democrat, has been a policy aide to former fourth district incumbent Democrat Tony Young, who left the seat in the midst of his term to take over the local Red Cross.

Malcolm was joined in her support of Williams by San Diego Republican mega-developer Tom Sudberry, who has so far given $1500, filings show.

In addition, a group calling itself San Diego County Voters for Progress and Reform has thus far spent a reported $4367 against Cole. Previous donors to that committee have included the Building Industry Association of San Diego PAC ($10,000); San Diego County Apartment Association PAC ($10,000); and the GOP Lincoln Club of San Diego County ($11,000), though no recent donation activity has been disclosed by the group.
