A man and woman are in custody tonight after evading arrest from El Cajon Police and California Highway Patrol officers.
Around 2 p.m., officers spotted Ali Alkafaji, a known fugitive, driving on the 1300 block of North Johnson Avenue in El Cajon. Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, aided by a CHP patrol unit. During the stop, Alkafaji intentionally rammed the police car, and then turned toward the CHP officer, now out of his car and, according to police reports, attempted to run the officer over. The CHP officer fired several shots at the oncoming car before jumping to safety.
Alkifaji continued to drive to the 800 block of Vernon Way, where he fled on foot. His passenger, 24-year-old Dasha Elkerton, remained in the car. Upon officers discovering two felony arrest warrants for Elkerton, she was arrested and booked into jail.
After a search, Alkafaji turned up nearly four hours later, uninjured from the previous collision and hiding under a car on the 700 block of Gable Way. After he refused to surrender, police unleashed a K-9 unit, who inflicted minor bite wounds. After receiving treatment for his wounds, Alkafaji was booked on two charges of assault with a deadly weapon upon a police officer and parole violations.
According to El Cajon Police Lieutenant Frank La Haye, no officers were injured during the arrest, though an investigation into the circumstances of the incident is ongoing.
